Islandiae

About

Hafsteinn Róbertsson is an Icelandic photographer who captures the light and landscape that shape Iceland and the Faroe Islands. In summer he draws inspiration from the highlands when the roads are open, and on cold winter nights he photographs the northern lights on Reykjanes. He has a special interest in Icelandic towns, each with its own character and most of them by the sea, where the balance between land and ocean is especially clear from the air.

All prints are produced by Hafsteinn himself on high-quality paper. By controlling the full process from photography to final finishing, each work receives the care and precision that only the author can bring to it.

About Islandiae

Islandiae is Hafsteinn's platform for photographs and prints. The name refers to the old Latin name for Iceland and reflects the respect for the country behind every image. Here you can order prints in various sizes, shipped anywhere in the world, directly from the photographer himself.

A little Latin

In Icelandic and European medieval usage from the 12th to the 15th century, three Latin forms were used for Iceland: Islandia, directly from "Ísland"; Snelandia; and Insula Gardari, meaning Garðar's Island after Garðar Svavarsson. Arngrímur Jónsson the Learned (1568-1648) helped make "Islandia" the international name. "Islandiae" is the genitive form of "Islandia" in Latin, meaning "of Iceland" or "from Iceland." The noun form itself is Islandia, often seen in titles such as Historia Islandiae, "History of Iceland," or Descriptio Islandiae, "Description of Iceland." This site presents images from Iceland, so its name carries that meaning: "Images of Iceland," or in Latin, "Imagines Islandiae."
